O Morning Star

O Morning Star

Kyle Pederson (2024)

Voicing: SATB
Accompaniment: a capella
Text: Philipp Nicolai, adapted by Kyle Pederson

O morning star, how fair and bright;
You shine with God's own truth and light,
aglow with grace and mercy.
O light eternal, radiant one,
we bid your truth in us now come;
illuminate the darkness.
Holy, holy,
great and glorious, blaze within us;
Lift our voices, hear our praises;
Alleluia through all eternity.

Come heav'nly brightness, light divine,
and deep within my heart now shine;
There make yourself an altar.
Fill me with joy, with strength to be your fol'wer,
joined eternally in love that cannot falter.
Longing for you,
love possessing, always blessing,
hearts confessing, lips professing;
Alleluia through all eternity.

COMPOSER NOTE:

Like Wake Awake, this five-hundred-year-old hymn was also penned by Philipp Nicolai. It is widely known as the “queen of chorales” and often paired with Wake Awake—the “king of chorales.”  In this reimagining, the harmonies, rhythms and texts are adapted to offer a fresh experience of the hymn. The enduring message remains, however--as we invite God’s spirit into our hearts, minds, and lives and as we join our voices together to sing “Alleluia!”
